 Case story – December 2006

God, if you really exist!?!

Please help us!!!

In a cold night of winter start, two young parents, overwhelmed with worries and problems, which seemed to have no end, are crying in a corner of the room, trying at the same time not to awake the three wonders that God have blessed them with. They look like three angels, pure and innocent, who do not know how the world is really like. They have the impression that life is beautiful and filled with joys, because since they were born their parents have always protected them and have always tried to do everything in their power so that nothing and no one overshadows their childhood.

„But did we succeed ...?” the two parents wonder sheltered by the dark. They tried to obtain a house for their children, but they didn’t manage to. Now, they all live together with the paternal grandparents, as well as with the father’s brothers and their families (5 families) in a house at the outskirts of Constanta. Each family has at its disposal a single room. They find their way out of the problems really hard, and the money that the men earn from occasional jobs is too little; in spite of all these burdens they continue fighting, supporting and helping each other.

„We are so lucky to have at least the family close! ..., but love and kindness only are not enough anymore. … we do need money. Like the doctor told us, we must take her to a cardiologist as soon as possible; we need to find out an accurate diagnosis in order for her to start receiving an appropriate treatment … and all these before is not too late!?” this is how they were crying and turning about the two parents greatly aged in a twinkling of the eye by worries and fear.

They were not anymore the two beautiful and full of life youths who everyone knew – now they were old and exhausted. They were whispering, so that none of the three children hear anything, but Bianca- Andreea was already awake. She knew she was the motif of her parents’ unrests, and she also couldn’t sleep for the same reasons.

She doesn’t understand why she cannot play like her brothers and cousins do; she cannot understand why is she getting sick every time she tries to run on the street with all the other children from the neighborhood or why she, who whished so much to go to school, is not able now to carry at least her schoolbag by herself!

All of these have only one explanation – Andreea- Bianca is ill, or at least this what her family doctor says. The physician suspects her to have some kind of heart malformation, and this is the reason why she is getting tired so quickly and has frequent attacks at the littlest effort. It’s a long time now since the family doctor started to tell her parents that the little girl needs to be taken to a specialist for further investigations and not to her consulting room every time Andreea feels sick.

„But what could we do??? We don’t have money ....., and in order to go to a cardiologist we do need money!”

The chance made that not so long after that cold night Holt România Foundation hear their story from another family in trouble. Through counseling and financial support, the young family was helped to take the little girl to the doctor and to do all the necessary investigations. Even now the situation isn’t too good, because it is possible that Andreea- Bianca might need a surgical intervention. But the people from Holt will continue to support them and will try to fulfill Andreea’s greatest dream – of being able to run together with her brothers and cousins, as well as with all the children who whish to hold in their hand a bright and delicate butterfly!

A dream that becomes true

“God, please teach me how to handle this child? I wonder if it is possible to keep my little child close to me. God, what if she dies?”

Sad thoughts, without any hope of a mother....in a small and shabby room the mother stays and cries...thought she is a young woman, her face shows that she has gone trough many troubles...

On the only bed from the room there are staying two children...two girls... the elder one is two years old and she is playing with a plastic bag...she likes the noise of it ...it is her last toy because she is so innocent she doesn’t realize that this isn’t a true toy....the other girl...sits down being surrounded by pillows...she is only six months old and she is looking around with her big eyes, trying to understand the meaning of things...

The mother has tears in her eyes and she looks worried to the little girl...her worries about the cadet are greater than about the elder one...she goes to her, she takes her in her arms...trying to feel her sadness and the child starts also to cry...

All the room is full with the mother’s sadness, who does everything she can to keep her babies with her....

“God, what have I done wrong? I have already lost two children…I gave up to one of them because I was too young and the second died when he was a few months old because he caught a very strong cold...now, I have these two little girls...I would like not to lose them...my heart, as a mother, couldn’t take it any more...I guess I couldn’t take to endure such a thing again...What should I do?”

The mother from our story asked for help to Holt Organization in order to keep her children at home. Especially, the little girl was at higher risk of being abandoned, because of the material situation. The mother had neither a permanent job, nor support from the rest of the family.

The case is still active and it is included on the Family Preservation Program. Using counseling and material support, the mother was helped to surpass the crisis situation and to keep the girl at home. The mother was helped to obtain low income housing from the local authorities and also a financial support every month.

“God, thank you! My dream becomes true...my children are with me - this is my greatest happiness and this is my rationale.”

The House-Where-Has-Never-Been-A-Christmas-Tree

In the house I am talking about, there has never been a Christmas tree before. And this didn’t happen because the people who lived there - a little girl, a little boy and a mother – didn’t wanted. This happened because almost always the Christmas tree lies somewhere on the place 93 from 100 on the mother’s list - somewhere before the doll, the toy - car, the cubes and other important things, but it is never so important to be on the top of the list. And because usually the money was few, mother listed the Christmas tree, just so, to keep the hope awake.

How could she buy a Christmas tree instead of bread or instead of the only pair of shoes that the children could wear in turn? So, year after year, the mother knew that she will not afford to buy a Christmas tree. But, the mother felt more and more the barging of the fact that she had to do something for her children who never have had Christmas-Tree-Of-Their-Own.

In a cold evening, before Christmas, she brought her children next to her among the lanky and patchy blankets, and thought it was just the moment to teach them something about hope. She said: "My dear children, next year will be a better one for us. Do you know why? Because then, we will start to buy from the end of the list!”

That year the chance made so that the mother meet the people from Holt Romania, and to tell them her Christmas tree story. They thought should help her start shopping from the end of the list, as she promised her children, and they made sure that the bread and the shoes were enough for the entire family.

From the kind-hearted ones for the people who don't forget to hope!
